High-End Cameras vs iPhone Cameras

People today are taking more photographs than ever before. The iPhone and virtually all cell phones have not just made it easy to take great photographs, but more importantly what they have made it even easier to share the photographs. The photographs are almost immediately shared with the persons family, friends, and contacts. Because of this innovation the social media platforms have become the communication funnel of choice.

You would think the camera manufactures, such as Canon and Nikon, would catch on to this feature by now. The camera companies seem to be focused on changing to mirrorless cameras rather than allowing the camera to share the photographs and video clips.

High end cameras are generally large, bulky, challenging to carry around, and take years of experience to learn how to properly use all the settings and features. Then you must decide what lens to buy. Do you buy a fix or zoom lens? The manuals are thick and overwhelming. Add all this up with having to purchase SD and CF cards that are expensive. Do you take your photographs in JPEG or RAW? Will you need to learn how to shoot in manual mode? Shutter speed, ISO, and aperture are all part of the balancing formula. What about post processing? It gets complicated.

By comparison, you can simply take your phone out of your pocket, aim at the subject, push the button, and the camera does all the work. With a few additional steps you can immediately airdrop the photograph, send in an email, put in a text message, and/or post on any social media platform. No need to have a series of lenses, SD/CF cards, no camera strap, no camera bag, and no heavy camera to carry around.

For well over 80% of all situations an iPhone camera will take photographs that will meet or exceed the needs of the average consumer. The other 20% will require more sophisticated camera equipment and knowledge of how to use the features as well as post production. Our only hope is the camera manufactures will have a wake-up call to include the features that people love about their iPhones.
