Who is Howard Blackburn?

Howard Blackburn

Howard Blackburn

Howard Blackburn is originally from Nova Scotia.  While living in Gloucester he was a fisherman.  During one of his winter fishing trips for halibut on the schooner Grace L. Fears a winter storm came up leaving him and another fisherman in their dory.

They spent five days without food, water, or much sleep rowing back to shore.  The other fisherman died.  Blackburn lost all his fingers, thumbs, and a toe.

He returns to Gloucester a hero having survived this incredible ordeal.  Because of the injuries, he was unable to return to fishing.  To help him get back on his feet the locals raised $500.00.  The money was used to open a cigar store and he applied for a liquor license.

The liquor license was granted in 1888, but Blackburn jumped the gun and ran his business in 1886.  The saloon was popular with locals and visiting sailors.

Halibut Point Restaurant carries with it the struggles and challenges that the residents of Gloucester have faced since the early settlers.
